“On Ma' Journey Now” - An Orangeburg Family's Journey from Enslavement to Artivism
A Documentary Film about Activist Dr. Yvette McDaniel

In October 2023, Write to Change, in partnership with the Douglas Oral History Project, hosted the premiere of On Ma’ Journey Now: An Orangeburg Family's Journey from Slavery to Artivism featuring Dr. Yvette McDaniel’s oral history and her call for youth inclusion. The event took place in Orangeburg, South Carolina, at the historic Holy Trinity Church as part of the SC Humanities Festival.

The documentary film is the culmination of a unique collaboration between Write to Change, and the Douglas Oral History Project in Arizona as part of the pilot project, "Envisioneers Orangeburg County." With the belief that the histories and experiences of ordinary people are often missing, Write to Change partnered with Dr. Ceci Lewis of the Douglas (Arizona) Oral History Project to interview McDaniel in April 2022 with the goal of presenting the completed oral history in 2023, and having it archived and available to the public.
